Militia camps: ‘ANC not involved’

2008-10-03 00:00

The ANC denies backing and bankrolling a paramilitary camp in Eshowe, an assertion made on e.tv news on Thursday night.

ANC provincial secretary Senzo Mchunu said the men in the camps have been recruited by a certain Mothate, who is a member of the SA National Defence Force (SANDF), who is believed to have promised them that they would be integrated in to the SANDF long after the process had been concluded.

He said the group was first based in Manguzi. When they were arrested, they were bailed out by Mothate, who moved the camp to the border of Swaziland, where they were again arrested.

Next, they went to the Mlaba camp in Ulundi. Here, tensions began to develop along political lines.

Those who chose to associate themselves with the ANC broke out of the Ulundi camp and then established their own camp in Eshowe, believing that associating themselves with the ANC would advance their case.

“We must emphasise that their establishing the camp in Eshowe had nothing do with the ANC as an organisation,” Mchunu said.
