Miserable weather: Emergency services kept busy

2009-01-29 00:00

The wet weather kept emergency services busy yesterday. Chris Botha of Netcare 911 said they responded to 11 road accidents in the greater Durban area.

“Road conditions were very poor with large puddles of water that had collected on the highways.

We transported 21 patients to hospital,” said Botha.

At Tinley Manor, a car crashed into the side of a truck leaving one person critically injured and eight more with minor injuries. In another incident, paramedics treated two seriously injured patients.

The N3 highway was closed on both sides yesterday morning in the midlands area, the result of two accidents involving trucks on either side of the N3.

A truckload of soap spilled onto the northbound road between Mount West and Mooi River causing a massive obstruction on the road. in the second incident, on the southbound highway in the Balgowan area, a truck lost control and jack-knifed. The road was blocked for most of the morning with traffic diverted to the R103.

The KZN Traffic Department said that the wet weather created unpleasant driving conditions.
