Miss Cultural SA to be crowned

2013-09-26 00:00

THE woman deemed most representative of her culture will this weekend walk away with the Indoni Miss Cultural SA crown at the Durban ICC.

The Indoni (Flower) Festival kicks off tomorrow with a display of the rich tapestry of South African cultural expressions through music, cultural dances, exhibition and textile along Durban’s West Street, said spokesperson Themba Mthembu.

Well-known Maskandi musician Khuzani will be performing at the street carnival, with Kulcha Kwest hosting the event.

The festival will culminate on Saturday with the crowning of the Indoni Miss Cultural SA at the ICC, where guests can expect a theatrical and dance showcase by the contestants representing the different cultural groups in South Africa. This event will be accompanied by the leading Maskandi artist Mtshengiseni “Indidane” Gcwensa.

In keeping with the Heritage Month celebrations, Mthembu said the pageant sought to promote intercultural awareness and understanding of each other.

In 2012, the pageant was won by KZN-born Thenjiwe Hadebe (22), who represented the Zulu culture and is currently doing community-based work through her Inqolobane Yempilo Foundation.
