Miss Cultural SA wants to use prize to put siblings through school

THE winner of Saturday’s Indoni Miss Cultural SA contest will use some of her prize winnings to put her siblings through school.

Tshepiso Madai from North West province represented the BaTswana culture at the showpiece event at Durban’s ICC. The Indoni Miss Cultural SA contest is aimed at encouraging young women to abstain from sexual activity to prevent the spread of HIV/Aids. This is the second year the event has taken place — it is supported by the eThekwini Municipality.

The 17-year-old’s duties as Miss Indoni include getting involved in a community-based project to share the experience of the contest with other young people, so they may follow suit.

She said culture was very important to youngsters. “It is very important to know where you are from to be certain about where you are going,” she said.

The Grade 11 pupil, who hails from Rustenburg, said the prize money of R100 000, besides shopping till she dropped, would go towards her tuition as she intends to become a social worker after completing matric. Tshepiso’s career choice is influenced by the fact that she is an orphan and lives with her two younger sisters, grandmother and extended family. “I want to put my sisters through school, as education is very important,” she said.
