Miss SA could take world crown

2009-12-12 00:00

BOLLYWOOD actress Priyanka Chopra will be a guest presenter at tonight’s Miss World final at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg.

Chopra, who won the Miss World title in 2000, will join China’s leading TV presenter, Angela Chow, South African TV host Michelle McLean and Miss World event director Steve Douglas on stage. The finale is being hosted in South Africa for the ninth time and is expected to have a global TV audience of one billion viewers.

The 112 contestants have spent a month in SA, enjoying a safari in the Eastern Cape, taking part in a beach beauty final in Durban and attending the 2010 Fifa World Cup draw in Cape Town.

The road to the finals for the 112 hopefuls was marked by preliminary mini-contests, which secured the winners a place in the semi-finals. Eruza Sasaki from Japan, Perla Beltran Acosta from Mexico and Mariatu Kargbo from Sierra Leone were some of the contestants who came tops in the early events.

Acosta is also the bookies’ favourite, with Miss Puerto Rico, Jennifer Colon, to win what many are calling the closest Miss World in years.

Overseas betting agents are offering odds of 17/10 on Miss Puerto Rico and 18/10 for Miss Mexico.

Miss SA, 25-year-old Tatum Keshwar, who is originally from Durban, is fourth favourite with the overseas bookmakers and has been given odds of 10/1.

Tickets are still available from Computicket.
