Missing Boston farmer home

2008-07-15 00:00

The farmer who went missing from his Boston farm on Monday has returned home and related the story of how he was held at gunpoint by intruders.

Police Inspector Jack Haskins said yesterday he was told by Cliff Ferns’s wife that Cliff was home safe. “He alleges that he disturbed … intruders who were trying to break in to his workshop and they accosted him, tied him up and blindfolded him.”

Haskins said the farmer was put on the back of a bakkie and driven around for the day. “They later dumped him on the side of the road, three kilometres from home.”

Fern declined to offer details of his ordeal, but said he was grateful to his community for trying to find him.

“The fact that I didn’t argue and stayed calm probably contributed to me still being alive.

“So many people are victims of crime and the fact that I was one of them and survived does not make me a hero … The real story is that our community was so strong in trying to find me.

There were prayer groups all over the country praying for my return.

“Based on the reaction of the community I might as well have been the president,” he said. — WR.
