Missing baby found unhurt

2011-08-23 00:00

FOUR-MONTH-OLD baby girl Minenhle Bhengu, who was reported missing on Sunday, was found yesterday three kilometres from her home at KwaQanda location at Taylor’s Halt.

Warrant Officer Mike Bennett of the Pietermaritzburg SA Police Service search-and-rescue unit said the search party was extremely relieved to find baby Minenhle unhurt.

It is believed that baby Minenhle was last seen by her 34-year-old mother.

When the news came to the attention of the search-and-rescue unit, they immediately embarked on an intensive search to find the little girl, who had been left in the cold for hours.

“Baby Minenhle was found about 11 am yesterday on the mountains of Mnywini area, approximately three kilometres from KwaQanda area,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan.

Bennett thanked members of the community at Taylor’s Halt who had helped in the search.

“It’s a miracle she was alright. She had been outside in the cold and the wind overnight and the hot sun yesterday, wearing only a babygro and a jacket,” said Bennett.

He told The Witness that the baby was not wrapped in a blanket.

The baby was sent to Edendale Hospital and an unconfirmed report said that the baby is “doing well” and was discharged the same day

She is in her grandparents’ care at KwaQanda.
