Missing boy (4) found safe in neighbour’s house

Pretoria — “Why didn’t you bring my dinosaur sweets?”

These were the first words Victor Robertson said to his mother when he was found safe after being missing for about 18 hours.

Victor (4) was found after an exhaustive search by police, his family and community members, locked in the house of one of his friends in the secure complex where he and his parents live in Pretoria.

The friend, Jacques Malan (5), and his parents are on holiday, and Victor slipped in while a neighbour was feeding their pet hamster.

“He went to play in Jacques’s room and the neighbour unwittingly locked him in the flat after she had finished watering the plants,” said Victor’s mother, Lindsay Robertson.

“I can’t explain it, but I knew the whole time that Victor was close to me and that nothing serious had happened to him,” she said.

Shortly after Victor went missing on Sunday afternoon, hundreds of people and the police’s search and rescue dog unit combed the complex and the nearby veld.

At about 9 am yesterday, more than 18 hours after Victor went missing, a police officer decided to knock on the doors of all 80 homes in the complex again, just in case someone had seen Victor.

At the Malans’ home he called: “Victor, are you there?”.

A small voice replied, “Yes, but I can’t get out”.

Victor later said he had not been scared when he was locked in.
