‘Missing’ couple touring SA

2015-03-07 00:00

AN Italian couple touring Pietermaritzburg blissfully continued with their holiday in South Africa, unaware that their family had reported them missing after they failed to make contact for 10 days.

Rosanna and Diego Verlato left Italy in February to tour South Africa for a few weeks. The couple last made contact with their family while they were in Pietermaritzburg on Febrary 20, before cutting all contact until Thursday afternoon.

“For their family not to have had contact with them for 10 days was very alarming. They reported it to the Italian police and ran articles in the Italian papers. The family asked us to report it to the police in South Africa,” said Italian Embassy secretary Paolo Bonissone.

He said the Verlatos were in the Western Cape when they eventually contacted their family on Thursday. “I think they are now on an aeroplane back to Italy. They have told us they had a fantastic holiday and that SA is a wonderful country,” laughed Bonissone.

He added that the South African police co-operation had been “outstanding” and he was grateful for their quick response in trying to find the Verlatos.
