Mission (almost) impossible across Africa for trio in old Beemer

2014-04-04 00:00

CAPE TOWN — The mission: recycle a 20-year-old BMW 318i. In Germany. After driving through 18 states in Africa. On a 20 000 km trip from Cape Town.

Ian Scrimgeour and Max Cromarty from the Mother City and Rowan Jelley from Johannesburg (all 26 years old) undertook this mission to raise funds for a paraplegic family friend, Mike Lomberg (52) from Cape Town.

Lomberg said he would not sell his more than two-decades-old BMW 318i and would only part with it to have it recycled in Munich.

“Mike was a test pilot in the air force and has left wheelchair-bound after a car crash in 1990. He bought a BMW and adapted it to be driven by one hand.”

Lomberg said he felt it was time to get rid of the car and wanted it to return to the home of BMW.

Scrimgeour explained that Lomberg wanted a pan-African journey to thank the creators of the car and to thank the vehicle for all the good years he had in it.

“BMW has a recycling unit to which people can take their cars. We have already made contact and hope to be there in the next three to four months,” Scrimgeour said.

The three mates had planned to leave on April Fool’s Day but the mechanic servicing the vehicle for the long journey did not finish in time.

“We are a bit nervous about the journey and the unknown issues along the way. We hope not to have problems and have planned the route well.”
