Mission impossible: a miracle and big 'IFS' in Bafana's bid for second round

2010-06-18 00:00

MEXICO’S 2-0 World Cup Group A victory against France in Polokwane last night has left Bafana Bafana what can only be described as a mission impossible to reach the second round of the tournament.

South Africa’s -3 goal difference, thanks to their resounding 3-0 defeat against Uruguay in Pretoria on Wednesday night, is the main stumbling block for the World Cup hosts.

Bafana’s last match is against France in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, and the South Africans — depending on the result of Mexico vs Uruguay encounter in Rustenburg — are likely to need a win by at least three goals against the ninth-ranked 2006 finalists to progress.

With one round of matches left to play, Uruguay are top of the group with four points and a +3 goal difference, and Mexico are second with the same points and a +2 difference.

France are third with one point and a -2 difference and South Africa are in an almost impossible position in last place on one point and with their -3 goal difference.

The highly unlikely permutations for Bafana to go through are for Uruguay to beat Mexico by three clear goals, which would leave the South Africans needing to beat France 3-0 to progress.

If the Mexicans thrash Uruguay by four clear goals, Bafana again still need a 3-0 win against France.
