Mixed bag of school sports this weekend

2013-03-09 00:00

THIS is transition time, with some schools playing their last cricket games and others their first rugby and hockey matches.

Many of the schools playing at the traditional rugby season opener in the Midlands at the Wartburg Sport’s Festival are down to play cricket today, but have instead opted for the winter code.

There are 12 rugby matches at Wartburg with 24 schools represented, most playing their first match, while some have played in the Voortrekker Night series. There are also matches at some of the top-tier schools.

The main match of the afternoon at Wartburg is Maritzburg College against Westville, which will likely attract a big crowd. Both schools will be using the clash as final preparation for the season, which officially starts next Saturday.

The other three matches involving the top schools are at Hilton, Northwood and George Campbell, where the home sides are playing Voortrekker, Kearsney and St Charles respectively.

Kearsney looked very impressive at King’s Park on Wednesday evening and should win against Northwood, who have bolstered their side this year with some imports. Hilton, playing their first match, should be too strong for Voortrekker. St Charles could have a tight game in Durban.

The main curtain raiser at Wartburg is the home side against Crawford La Lucia and both are turning out for their first game. Earlier matches will be played on both A and B fields.

In addition to the rugby, Wartburg have girls’ hockey and netball matches. The following co-ed schools have representation in all three codes: Pongola, Kokstad, Scottburgh, Kingsway, Durban Academy, New Forest, Ixopo, Howick, Estcourt, Heritage Academy, and hosts Wartburg. Playing in two codes are Linpark, Carter, King Edward from Matatiele, St Henry’s and Domino Servites.

There is also some boys’ hockey this morning with a quadrangular set of warm-up matches between Michaelhouse, Hilton, Maritzburg College and St Charles.

Glenwood play their last cricket match against Sunfoil.
