Mixed fortunes for PMB clubs

2008-04-27 00:00

It was a Saturday of good and bad for Pietermaritzburg’s senior club rugby teams engaged in provincial competitions.

There were smiles for the PMB Waratahs at Woodburn as they secured a win over struggling Wentworth in this First Division South encounter.

After leading 14-7 at half-time, the battling Waratahs firsts came away with a praiseworthy 21-12 victory. Players who stood out for Waratahs were the elusive Rudi Minnie on the wing and busy hooker George Meyer.

Across Scottsville at Varity’s rugby stadium, the campus-based club’s first side did well to hold Old Boys of Durban North to a three-point lead at half-time. But the floodgates opened in the second half for Old Boys to add 44 further points with 10 against to run away to a 66-29 victory.

After five defeats in the five matches played, Maritzburg Varsity remain entrenched at the bottom of the Moor Cup Premier Division log. This is clearly of concern to a proud club that is 97 years old this year.

In Winterton, the Drakensberg first XV were comprehensive 46-17 winners over Maritzburg Collegians in a First Division South clash.

Also in First Division South, the struggling Kokstad first side were beaten 45-5 away to Amanzimtoti, the south coast team appearing to be a much-improved outfit this season.

The same applies to Port Shepstone-based South Coast Warriors, who travelled to Ballito and beat the holiday town’s Dolphins 30-5.

There is more club rugby to look forward to in the capital city tomorrow evening, when Midlands take on Old Boys in the 8 pm main game at Woodburn. This U20A Division match follows the 6.30 pm curtain-raiser that sees Midlands again meeting Old Boys in the U20B Division, while on Woodburn’s number two field, Midlands U20C tackle Old Boys, and Midlands U20D — also known as the PMB Waratahs U20 side according to club chairman Fanie Crous — face Queensburgh.
