Mixed results for Treverton

2013-06-04 00:00

IT was one up and one down for Treverton in the recent Parklane SuperSpar A-League action.

Against Voortrekker on a cold, miserable afternoon it was Treverton’s striker, Ciara Botha, who opened the scoreline.

She picked up a loose ball after the initial shot from a short corner was saved by Voortrekker ’keeper Prudence Qwesha.

Treverton’s Kylee McLoughlin then found the Vories defenders wanting when she scored from open play to make it 2-0.

Treverton employed an expansive game plan, stretched the field and made things very difficult for the Vories defenders.

Although Voortrekker were more disciplined in their defensive structure during the second half, not conceding any goals, they were never any threat to the Treverton defence.

In Treverton’s second match, it was The Wykeham Collegiate who went away with the three points after a 3-1 win.

TWC were the dominant team, but struggled to convert their opportunities in the first half. Late into the first half it was Sarah Dixon who passed a ball from outside the circle to the corner post, but was deflected into the goals by a defender for an own goal and TWC were 1-0 up.

The plucky Treverton girls refused to lie down and managed to stay in the game with Kylee McCloughlin scoring the equaliser late into the second half.

With 10 minutes to go, open space allowed TWC captain Melissa Glutz to nail a top netter to make the score 2-1.

A short corner for TWC at the end of the match saw Cynthia Kijjambu batting the rebound ball into the back of the box.

Young goalkeeper Emily Webster of Treverton must be commended on her fine saves throughout the game.

A tough week lies ahead for the unbeaten TWC team, who face rivals St Anne’s and Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School (GHS).

Meanwhile, in a non-league fixture, Vories took on Port Natal, with Vories being unbeaten in the past 10 seasons in the annual affair.

“Having created so many chances and not being able to capitalise was very disappointing and a 1-1 draw was certainly not a true reflection on the game,” said Voortrekker coach Charmaine Koekemoer.

In 2003 Vories won 3–0; in 2004 won 9-1 (on Astro); in 2005 the schools drew 1-1; in 2006 Vories won 1-0; in 2007 the schools did not play due to the teachers’ strikes; in 2008/9/10 it was 1-1; in 2011 it was 0-0; and in 2012 it was 1-1. All the matches were played on grass other than in 2004.

Voortrekker dominated the match on a bumpy grass field, something that the Vories girls are not used to, as all their fixtures in the Parklane SuperSpar A-League take place on artificial turf.

It was Vories star midfielder and captain Carmen Potgieter who scored a brilliant individual goal midway through the first half when she received a great pass in space from striker Jualinda Simpson.

Potgieter used her speed to eliminate the Port Natal sweeper and slapped the ball high into the net for a spectacular first goal of the match.

Vories look very threatening as they employed a passing game to try and overcome the conditions, but were unable to capitalise on nine short corners and many more opportunities to score.

With three minutes left, Port Natal equalised off a loose ball that came bouncing across the circle.
