Mmzinto Plaque: serial killer’s victims remembered

2011-05-06 00:00

A PLAQUE commemorating the rape and murder victims of notorious serial killer Thozamile Taki was erected at Shayamoya in Umzinto on Wednesday.

Taki — known as the Sugarcane Killer — murdered 13 women aged 18 to 25 and dumped their bodies in agricultural plantations.

The speaker of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Peggy Nkonyeni, performed the unveiling ceremony. She was accompanied by members of the legislature, trade unionists and the families of the murdered women.

Trade union federations Cosatu, Nactu and Fedusa also paid tribute to the victims.

In January Taki was given 13 life sentences for the murders and an additional 208 years — 16 years for each of his victims of armed robbery.

Taki murdered 10 of his victims in the sugarcane plantations around Umzinto and a further three in tea plantations near Port St Johns.

His girlfriend, who was tried with him as an accessory, was acquitted.

The trial judge accepted that although she had items belonging to some of the victims, she had not been involved in the crimes.

Taki was in remand at Westville prison during his trial.

On February 21, 2010, Taki and eight other prisoners tried to escape from the prison. Taki fell from the roof of his fourth-floor cell, seriously injuring himself, while his accomplices made a safe getaway.

On March 2, 2010, Taki entered court in a wheelchair. He asked that his girlfriend be given bail.

Judge King Ndlovu postponed the trial until April 30, 2010, where the remaining eight of the state’s 103 witness were to testify.

On December 23, 2010, Taki was convicted of all charges.
