Mngadi may be on her way out

2008-01-25 00:00

It’s almost official. The Witness heard yesterday from reliable sources close to the Umgungundlovu district council that their municipal manager, “Doctor” Monica Mngadi (pictured), has resigned.

Details of this are expected to be given to councillors at a special meeting at the municipality today.

Close sources allege that the financial head of the municipality, Bongani Ndlovu, could also be on his way out. It is believed that the two have finally bowed to pressure from the province and public opinion.

The Witness was unable to get official comment on the resignations of either Mngadi or Ndlovu yesterday.

One source said the resignations were not finalised yesterday, but that they are widely expected to be tabled at the council meeting today.

The district council has been plagued with financial problems and recently accepted a recovery plan drawn up by the provincial treasury department.

Mngadi shot into the spotlight shortly before her appointment as municipal manager on October 1 last year, after investigations revealed that her qualifications for the top-paying position were questionable.

Numerous appeals to Mayor Bongi Sithole and Mngadi herself to provide proof of Mngadi’s qualifications, including an MBA and a degree, were ignored.

They also declined to show why she was the best candidate for the job in terms of experience and knowledge of local government.

It was also discovered that according to her CVs, Mngadi listed herself as the “chairman” of the Life Time Bible College, the same institution that allegedly conferred an honorary doctorate on her, and which she cites to claim her “doctor” status.
