Mob assaults bakery truck driver, assistant

2014-08-27 00:00

A TRUCK driver and his assistant from Sunshine Bakery in Willowton were rescued by security guards from attackers who assaulted them yesterday morning.

The driver and his assistant were in Pietermaritz Street when they were attacked by a group of people trying to remove bread from the truck.

Sunshine operating officer Anton Lan said the truck was prevented from continuing with deliveries by the group.

“They [the driver and assistant] were assaulted and injured during the incident. Bread was removed from the truck and subsequently stolen.

“At this stage, it is not known if the incident is related to current industrial action taking place at Sunshine. We cannot comment in this regard,” said Lan.

Security guards saved the driver and his assistant from the mob.

Some staff of Sunshine Bakery are on strike and are picketing outside the bakery’s gates.

Professional Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (PTAWU) organiser Andreas Nxumalo distanced union members from the incident.

“All our members are here at the gate. It can be people using the opportunity as they know that we are on strike. We will be gathering like this until they meet our demands,” said Nxumalo.

Lan said they would open a case of assault and theft.

He added that the bakery has been engaged in wage negotiations with the union for the past few months.

“Attempts to settle the negotiations through the CCMA were unsuccessful. Union members elected to strike,” said Lan.

He vowed that Sunshine Bakery would continue its endeavours to engage with the union to end the strike.

Plans have been implemented to reduce disruption to the supply of bread to customers.
