Mobile hospitals roll out

2014-12-10 00:00

THE Department of Health yesterday announced plans to launch mobile hospitals in remote areas as part of its plans to bring healthcare service closer to the people.

The mobile hospitals will offer more services than are currently offered by the mobile clinics.

Tabling his service delivery report at the provincial legislature yesterday MEC for Health Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo said these mobile hospitals were ready to be deployed in areas that do not have fixed clinics and are far removed from hospitals.

“They can be docked anywhere; be it mountains, valleys, informal settlements and even pension pay points. They come with qualified personnel and equipped to offer a full comprehensive primary health care package.”

He said these mobile hospitals are fitted with a waiting area, computer equipment for patient registration, data collection and importation. They will have consulting rooms, x-ray machines, ultrasound and other equipment.

He said that the treatment they would offer included TB screening, medical male circumcision, eye screening and cervical cancer screening.

“Working with local leadership, we have committed to identify points with high population densities where the mobile hospitals will be stationed for one week and then move to another area,” he said.
