Mokoena: team in Emirates ‘very interested in him’

JOHANNESBURG — Former Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena could be on his way to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) or Spain after reiterating his desire to leave his current club, Ports-mouth.

Mokoena initially signalled his intentions to find a new club last month, but appeared to have his potential move curtailed by Pompey manager Steve Cotterill, who admitted he couldn’t afford to lose any players.

But with the Championship side having secured the signature of on-loan defender Greg Halford, as well as signing Jason Pearce, Mokoena may well find himself out of contention for next season.

The South African’s agent, Dietmar Wendorff, revealed Mokoena will weigh up his options, with an unnamed UAE team his most likely destination.

Wendorff told the Portsmouth News: “Aaron’s told me that he wants to leave now and I have a team in the Emirates who are very interested in taking him.

“We’re negotiating with the club at the moment, but I cannot say who it is. We are hoping for a salary of around two million euros (about R19,1 million) a year. I’ve also talked to him about Spain, but we will have to compare the offers.”
