Moms enjoying trips without men

2014-12-22 00:00

IT’S the age where women are taking charge and doing things for themselves.

This holiday season many single mothers are travelling across the country with their children for a getaway.

Travelling mostly from Pretoria, Johannesburg and Bloemfontein, mothers are braving the holiday season without a man and opting for the company of their friends and their children.

Midlands Beverly Country Cottages owner Kate Kelly said there had been quite a few moms with their children who’d booked into her cottages without their husbands.

Kelly said the moms she’d spoken to had travelled alone with their children because their husbands were busy working. Or they were divorced and visiting older children who lived, or were attending school, in the area.

The manager of Durban-based Lobelia Cottage, who asked not to be named, said women came there from as far afield as Bloemfontein and Pretoria and had absolutely no male company.

“I’ve had two big groups of mothers with their children come in,” she said. “I don’t know if they were single mothers, divorced or if the husbands were just working, but they had fun.”

Renowned South African businesswoman Ali Engelbrecht said that she had been travelling on her own with just her daughter for five years.

“I always feel safe, and as a businesswoman, I often travel alone, so it is not an issue.”

Engelbrecht said the trick to travelling without a man is to plan the trip well, and to always have help on hand.

“Single mothers should travel with their children, it teaches them and their children skills and responsibility.”
