Mondays may become maths-free

2015-02-03 00:00

IF Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga gets her way, Mondays could soon be many pupils’ favourite day at school.

But teachers are very unhappy after her announcement that grade 8 and 9 math teachers must receive 23 days of extra training during school hours on Mondays.

Teachers’ union Naptosa deputy president Anthea Cereseto said maths teachers do not just teach mathematics in many schools, but also other subjects.

She said grade 8 and 9 teachers were already under pressure to finish their work in time.

Chris Klopper, executive head for the Suid-Afrikaanse Onderwysunie (SAOU), said the decision will hold many unplanned consequences.

He said apart from disrupting the teaching roster, not all schools needed to retrain their mathematics teachers.

He said the different provinces and districts also had different ideas about the academic level of education.

Spokesperson for the department Elijah Mhlanga said all other options had been considered and the best option was to train maths teachers during the school day.

“We have to be much more radical and do more than the usual,” he said.
