Monster shark bites Munster diver’s calf

2011-05-10 00:00

SOUTH Coast spear fisherman Trevor Burger (37) escaped with his calf savaged by a shark after the predator bit his leg, shook it and then swam away.

“I am so lucky. I felt the pressure on my leg. I felt the shark shake it but, as I turned around to look, the shark let go of my calf and simply swam away,” said a very shaken Burger. “It was almost an investigative bite — all I can say is that I am very grateful because, while I didn’t stick around to look at what kind of shark it was, I do know that it was about

The nightmare incident happened last week after Burger and a friend launched from Glenmore Beach early in the morning. They eventually found a diving spot off Palm Beach.

Burger had just surfaced with a fish about 30 m from their boat when the shark attacked him.

“We had bandages on the boat and then got to shore as fast as possible,” he said.

Burger was given 58 stitches. The bite mark on the wetsuit shows a perfect set of teeth marks which Burger will be showing to a shark expert to identify his attacker.

How does Burger feel about returning to the water?

“I have two weeks before the wounds will be healed — and I have to be totally honest, it was very scary. In this game I guess spear fishermen are the most vulnerable … but still you never really think it will happen to you. Yes … I feel a bit nervous about this whole thing now.”
