Montrose: waste not collected

2009-12-29 00:00

ANNOYED that their rubbish was not collected on Christmas Day, affected Montrose residents contacted The Witness in droves to voice their displeasure.

Cedric Parker said their refuse was meant to be taken last Friday, but yesterday it was still awaiting collection.

“There are 186 units where I live, so you can imagine how much rubbish this amounts to,” he said.

Parker said he spoke to a municipal official who said an advertisement informing residents that refuse would not be collected did not appear in The Witness as planned due to an administrative error.

The Witness discovered yesterday that the municipal employee meant to place the advert failed to provide the necessary order number.

Ward councillor Keith Olivier said he received numerous complaints and some areas had been without refuse collection for two weeks.

He complained to a senior waste department manager, who went to Montrose and told the workers to arrive promptly. “The truck arrived with no workers and the manager had to load the rubbish,” said Olivier.

This has happened twice, said Olivier, and he has no idea why workers are being “choosy”.

Waste department manager Richard Rajah said refuse will be collected today. He said rubbish is collected in the area on Tuesdays and Fridays, and the Friday team often have to pick up Tuesday rubbish as well, since overtime has been cut back.
