Mooi River mayor accused of being lazy

2014-07-28 00:00

MPOFANA (Mooi River) mayor Ntombi Mpangase-Mchunu stands accused of “being lazy” and “spending most of her time on social networks”.

The allegations were made in an IFP statement.

IFP MPL Mzamo Buthelezi said he was going to write to KZN MEC For Co-operative Governance Nomusa Dube-Ncube, questioning what action, if any, she had taken regarding the Mpofana mayor. Buthelezi said Mpangase-Mchunu had been described by councillors and the community as a “total failure”.

According to the MPL, the town’s residents had been complaining about the mayor for a while and there had been no action from the MEC. He said complaints had included allegations of laziness and spending most of her time on social networks instead of focusing on service delivery.

Contacted by The Witness, Mpangase-Mchunu said she was shocked by the allegations. However, she refused to comment saying this was the first time she had heard of them.

In 2013, Mpofana Municipality was affected by protracted labour unrest and at that time there were calls for the mayor to go.

Earlier this year residents were up in arms over rates being levied unevenly and exorbitant electricity bills while the roads and municipal buildings were disintegrating due to lack of maintenance.
