Moor Cup club rugby: Varsity, Jaguars in try fest

2008-05-25 00:00

The Moor Cup Premier Division club rugby match between Jaguars and Maritzburg Varsity had spectators on the edge of their seats as both sides conjured up a feast of tries.

High-flying Jaguars are never an easy proposition at their Capel Road stronghold in Sydenham — and so it proved for Varsity, as the home side raced to a 41-12 lead at the changeover.

Although Varsity managed two tries in the first half, Jaguars — packed with Sharks junior-contracted players — were so far ahead by the break that the campus-based side’s supporters feared a rout in the second half. But it was not to be.

Granted, Jaguars’ backline were outstanding on attack, but they couldn’t have anticipated such a fightback. The never-say-die Varsity men proceeded to win the second-half try count four to three for a meritorious six touchdowns as they ran the ball from all quarters of the field to manufacture magnificent tries.

"The half-time team talk centred around us outplaying our opponents in the second half as we realised the outcome of the match had already been decided," said Varsity chairman Zak Binikos. "It was vintage Varsity rugby of old in the second half and the guys came off the field in upbeat mood to the cheers of an appreciative crowd, who recognised their spirited effort and acknowledged the adventurous rugby they had played."

However, although both teams cannot fault their attacking skills, it is clear that lots of work needs to be done in plugging the holes in defence.

The major upset of the weekend was Zululand out-scoring ambitious home team Old Boys 36-17 at the superb Riverside sports complex in Durban North, while Rovers continued their relentless match to the title at home to Harlequins.
