More accolades coming Amla’s way

2013-06-20 00:00

HASHIM Amla could add four more awards to his already impressive collection at next month’s Cricket South Africa (CSA) professional awards in Johannesburg.

Recognised as the leading Test batsman in the ICC Test batting rankings and number two in the one-day standings, Amla heads a list of five nominees for the SA Cricketer of the Year award. It’s not a foregone conclusion he will raise the trophy, as he is up against AB De Villiers, Faf du Plessis, Vernon Philander and Dale Steyn.

Besides this accolade, Amla is also a nominee for the Sunfoil Test Cricketer of the Year, the Momentum One-Day International Cricketer of the Year and the KFC So Good awards.

With plenty of cricket being played throughout the year, it’s easy to forget what has been achieved on the field. Amla amassed 1 321 in Test matches at an average of 82,56, with five centuries and four fifties. On the one-day stage, he scored 552 runs at an average of 61,33. Included in Amla’s feats was his magnificent undefeated 311 against England at The Oval, becoming the first South African to score a triple century. It’s thanks to this innings he gets the nod for the So Good award, which recognises an outstanding single achievement.

AB de Villiers continued to be a world class, consistent performer at all levels of the game, while Du Plessis’s match-saving and series-winning performances against Australia Down Under cannot be forgotten. His heroics in the second Test at Adelaide where he batted all day in scoring a debut century to deny the hosts victory has become part of South Africa’s rich cricket history.

With ball in hand, Steyn and Philander have ensured the Proteas remain at the top of the ICC Test rankings. They spearheaded a balanced and fearsome attack acknowledged as the best in the world, laying waste all before them.

Steyn bagged 60 Test wickets at 20,26 and Philander 38 at 21,13. Highlights were Steyn’s 6-8 against Pakistan in Johannesburg and Philander’s 5-7 against New Zealand at Newlands. This latter performance has also been nominated for a So Good award.

CSA acting CEO Naasei Appiah said: “This has been the most successful year in South African Test cricket. There have been inspiring individual performances and Graeme Smith’s leadership must not be forgotten.”

The judging panel was convened by Colin Bryden, editor of the South African Cricket Annual, joined by broadcaster Aslam Khota, South Africa’s Cricketer of the Century Graeme Pollock and former Protea and Knights speedster Victor Mpitsang.

Cricket fans have a say in two awards — the Fans Cricketer of the Season and the RAM Delivery of the Season. Voting can be done at or on CSA’s official Facebook page.

The awards are at the Sandton Convention Centre on Wednesday, July 3.
