More bad news for Sanele May

2013-11-05 00:00

TRUCK driver Sanele May’s sibling was one of the people who lost everything in the fire that engulfed the Kennedy Road informal settlement on Sunday morning.

Trevor Dlamini, brother of the Swaziland truck driver involved in the Field’s Hill accident that claimed 24 lives, said he lost all his belongings, including his matric certificate.

Speaking to The Witness, he says he was lucky that he was not inside when the fire gutted their shack. “I have never seen anything like that before,” he said. adding that the fire was spread by strong wind.

“The fridge, bed, cabinet and my matric certificate, which I’m supposed to use in securing an admission at either college or university level, were also burnt,” he said.

Also lost in the fire were all the food and money received from the Sanele May support group to pay for Dlamini’s rent and bus fare to visit his brother at Westville prison.

Kennedy Road councillor Obed Ngcobo said 168 shacks caught fire on Sunday morning, in a blaze believed to have been sparked by illegal connections.

Two people were injured but they have since been released from hospital.

The councillor said they are in the process of delivering materials for residents to rebuild their lives.
