More charges: policeman's son a suspected housebreaker and fraudster

2009-11-17 00:00

THE son of a senior Pietermaritzburg policeman, who is charged with the theft of a police vehicle from Alexandra Road police station earlier this month, faces additional charges of housebreaking and fraud arising from the incident.

Siphakamiso Muziwavuka Gcumisa (21), son of director Daniel Gcumisa — who is the cluster commander of the Plessislaer police area — was yesterday granted bail of R2 000 by Pietermaritzburg magistrate Divesh Mootheram.

The case was postponed to November 30.

Prosecutor Ricky van Wyk told the court that Gcumisa is also being charged with breaking into an office through an open window, from where he allegedly stole the car keys for the police vehicle as well as a chocolate. The state also alleges that Gcumisa fraudulently made use of a police garage card to fill the vehicle with petrol.

Sources told The Witness that Gcumisa abandoned the stolen car after it over-heated.

Gcumisa earlier this year entered into a plea bargain agreement with the state over similar allegations involving the illegal use of two state vehicles in June 2007 and May 2008. Both vehicles were involved in accidents.
