More sleep and less work for durban’s grasscutters

2011-04-16 00:00

NOTHING quite like a laze in the hay, but not when you ought to be cutting it, and a group of sub-contractors were found doing just that in Durban suburb of Greenwood Park this week.

According to resident Farrah Shaik, the grasscutters arrived between 6.30 am and 7 am and were already sound asleep from about 8 am.

“By the time I left home at 9.15 am they showed no signs of waking up,” she said.

“The grass along the verges in Dalestan Place and Stockton Road have only been cut [by the municipality] three times in the past six months and we only get four unsupervised employees … The grasscutters only cut half-a-metre away from the pavement and leave the rest of the grass to grow into an uncontrollable bush.

“When questioned about why they don’t cut further in, the contractors say that they have received instructions from their superiors to only cut one metre in and that a separate company will cut the grass further back. That company has only been once in the past year,” she said.

Members of the municipality were unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.
