More women candidates fielded

2011-03-30 00:00

AFTER news that the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has only a few women candidates to represent them in the local government elections on May 18, the National Freedom Party in the Ugu District has declared that 45% of its candidates will be women.

NFP spokesperson Freeman Maphumulo said that in each of five of the six municipalities under Ugu, at least two women and two youths are represented, and in the district list the party has made sure that there is enough representation of women.

The IFP chairperson in the Ugu District, inkosi Ngamzizwe Madlala, said that it was emphasised in all the party’s constituencies within Ugu that they should make sure that women, youth and other races were represented when nominating the candidates who will stand for the party in the coming election.

“I am not in a position to give exact figures, but I am sure that the lists from our constituencies did not only have names of male candidates, but women, youth and people from other races were represented,” Madlala said.

He also confirmed that the IFP was not registered by the Independent Electoral Commission in Umzumbe due to certain technicalities, which have forced the party to take its grievance to the Electoral Court.

Attempts to get hold of the ANC’s regional secretary in Ugu, Mzwandile Mkhwanazi, were not successful.
