THE mugging victim who was attacked near the Moses Mabhida Stadium has contacted police after learning that 17-year-old Nathan van Reenen was killed when he came to her aid.

The Witness reported that Nathan was stabbed to death at Walter Gilbert Street near the Moses Mabhida Stadium at around 2.35 am on Saturday.

Investigating officer, Warrant Officer Raven Mundhree, said the woman was made aware of the stabbing through the media and contacted him late Tuesday evening.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said Nathan was with friends in their vehicle near Moses Mabhida stadium when they saw a woman being robbed by a man.

Nathan went out to help the woman and the attacker ran off.

He gave chase and caught the man. During the scuffle, it is alleged that the attacker stabbed Nathan in the neck. He was taken to hospital where he later died.

At the time of the mugging, the woman had run off in fear, leaving Nathan behind to fight off the attacker.

Mundhree said the woman was too traumatised to give any statements and he hoped for a response soon.

“She has come forward stating she will help in any way she can with the investigation, but was unable to make a statement as she is still very upset about the incident.

“It is possible that she will be ready to give us a statement today,” said Mundhree.

Mundhree said the Van Reenen family are too distraught to discuss the incident and do not wish to make any comment at this time.

Zwane said investigations are continuing and witnesses should come forward if they have any information.
