Mother fights off home invaders

2009-11-20 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG woman was stabbed when she fought “tooth and nail” to defend her family, including an 18-month-old baby, against two robbers who attacked her at her house in Westgate yesterday.

Khanyisile Hlophe (40) and her domestic employee, Bongiwe Ziqubu (22), found the two men in the house at 8.30 am.

Hlophe was preparing to go to town and Ziqubu was cleaning the bathroom when they heard noises from the kitchen.

Ziqubu went to check and a man who was standing in the kitchen attacked her.

“I heard my helper screaming for help and I rushed to her aid and saw this man punching at her face. I tried to intervene, but then he punched at me as well.

“I picked up a chair and I hit him and he fell on the floor. We both grabbed him by the feet and dragged him into the bedroom.”

The women wanted to lock their assailant inside the bedroom and call the police, but they were disturbed by the second attacker who came running with a knife.

“The second man came towards the door with a knife and tried to force the door open but I pushed back to close it.

When I saw the knife I was scared that he will stab me and even my 18-month-old baby, so we struggled. He managed to put his hand inside and stabbed me in the head and arm.”

Hlophe said that at the time the baby was sleeping in his cot.

While Hlophe was struggling at the door, Ziqubu was fighting with the other man on the floor.

Hlophe said she had to let go of the door when her head wound started bleeding profusely.

“I could not see because of the blood, so I had to let go. My helper was also overpowered and both the attackers ran away with two DVD players”.

Hlophe believes the robbers were targeting her house because Ziqubu is usually alone during the day. “I think they have been monitoring our moves and noticed that we all leave for work in the morning and live the helper alone. Unfortunately for them I was home since I am on leave.”

Police spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan said a third man was standing guard at the gate during the robbery.

Ziqubu was treated by paramedics at the scene and Hlophe was taken to Edendale Hospital for treatment.

Jeevan appealed to anyone with information about the incident to contact Inspector Xolani Zondi of Alexandra Road detective services at 033 845 7724 or 083 292 2314.

Anonymous callers should contact Crime Stop on the toll-free number 08600 10111.
