Mother of two gets 20 years for paid hit

A 29-YEAR-OLD mother of two was jailed for 20 years by a regional court magistrate on Friday for her role in the “hired killing” of a woman she allegedly believed was planning to kill her.

Ntokozo Celani Crystal Nzuza pleaded guilty to arranging the murder of Martha Fisani Magcaba at Makholweni, Eston, on April 23, 2008, by hiring a killer for a sum of R7 000.

According to her statement to court she and her former boyfriend, Musa Hamilton Xaba, planned the murder together.

In a statement read to court by her attorney, Jameel Vorajee, Nzuza said that before the incident she had numerous arguments with Magcaba and her child, which “eventually turned physical”.

She and Xaba had gone to see a sangoma in Swaziland to establish the root of the problem.

The sangoma told them that Magcaba wanted to kill her.

Nzuza said they were given muthi to prevent this from happening, but she declined to accept the muthi and concluded that she would have to arrange for Magcaba to be killed before she herself was killed.

After their arrival home she and Xaba discussed the matter further and Xaba told her that he would make the necessary arrangements to have Magcaba killed, to which she agreed.

“At some stage thereafter he told me that he had hired a person by the name of Siphelele Mkhize to have the deceased [Magcaba] killed,” Nzuza said.

She said tht not long thereafter she had heard gunshots at Magcaba’s home and phoned a relative to find out what had happened.

“It was then that I learnt that the deceased had been shot and killed as we had planned,” she said.

Nzuza said she was remorseful for her actions and asked the court for mercy.

According to a probation officers’ report handed to court, Nzuza accepted responsibility for her actions.

She was a first offender and has two young children.
