Motherwell: Grieving team 'on fire' in tourney

2012-04-09 00:00

PORT ELIZABETH — The Motherwell rugby club, which recently lost six members in a mass drowning, fared well at this weekend’s Easter tournament in Cape Town.

After a first day loss to Masiphumelene of Cape Town, the team won their next two matches. “You should have seen us! The guys were playing out of their skins, the team spirit is unbelievable,” team spokesperson Manduleli Ngqoshana said yesterday. On Saturday, Motherwell beat Evergreens of East London 14-8 and yesterday bested Zwide of Port Elizabeth 8-0.

Ngqoshana said all the teams that lost their first matches played for a place in the so-called “second final”, and Motherwell won through.

“The winner of tonight’s matches will meet us tomorrow,” he said. “I’m almost sorry for them, because our players are so on fire it’s almost not fair,” he said, laughing. “They’re playing to honour the friends they lost …”

Ngqoshana said the support the team have received from the SA Rugby Union and the other teams has been amazing. — Own Correspondent.
