Motorists warned of more jams on Motala

PIETERMARITZBURG motorists face another month of lengthy traffic snarl-ups during rush hour when Chota Motala between East Street and Northway Mall is reduced to a single lane to allow contruction workers to complete the interchange upgrade.

Construction company Group Five’s safety manger for Chota Motala interchange N3 upgrade, Chris Govender, said in a statement that work on the interchange would include tarring the road, building pavements and installing street lights.will vary from asphalt (putting the final black layer to complete the road construction), kerb & channelling to street lighting.

“We will be required to reduce the traffic lanes on Chota Motala to one lane in each direction and contra flow between off-peak hours from 8.30 am to 4 pm,” he said.

He said the Chota Motala off-ramp would be periodically closed and traffic detoured along Gumtree Road.

The public can expect delays throughout September.

Group Five project manager Bradley Naidoo said the traffic authorities in Msunduzi Municipality and the provincial Road Traffic Inspectorate had been instructed to the help direct traffic during the congestion.backlog that will be caused as a result of these changes.
