TOP national and provincial mountain bike riders took part in a celebrity race as part of the official opening of Kearsney College’s mountain bike track at the weekend.

The fastest time of 12:55 was recorded by James Reid, a Kearsney old boy and top SA junior MTB rider. Behind him were Andrew Hill (13:23) and Carl Calverly (13:58).

The fourth-fastest time was from promising Grade 8 rider from Kearsney, Carlos Marazoppi, in 15:38; who finished just ahead of Dwayne Stander in 15:54.

Developed on land left to the College by old boy David Hall 10 years ago, the five-kilometre cross-country track includes technical sections, steep climbs and switchbacks.

The track was designed by old boy Jan Abbott of Clearwater Trials, together with input from deputy headmaster Anthony Willows.

“We have spent a lot of time ensuring the single track is up to standard, so that it can be used for world-class cross-country events, including a school mountain bike series,” Willows said.

A full-time conservancy and track supervisor has been appointed to maintain the track and manage the boys and clubhouse.
