Mpofana senior manager suspended

2014-10-09 00:00

A SENIOR manager in the troubled Mpofana Municipality of Mooi River has been suspended.

This is reportedly the second time that Mpume Maphumulo, director of good governance, has been suspended, according to reliable sources.

On the previous occasion, charges against her were withdrawn.

The Witness has established that Maphumulo was again suspended last week by the newly appointed municipal administrator, Buhle Ali.

Maphumulo confirmed her suspension yesterday, but maintains she has done nothing wrong and is being made a scapegoat.

DA constituency chairperson for Mooi-Umgeni KZN Ken Denysschen said his understanding was that Maphumulo was suspended on charges of gross misconduct and incompetence.

“The one issue that I raised with the CFO was that she tried to make councillors sign a councillor’s code of conduct and to backdate it to 2011,” he said.

Denysschen said he thought she should be charged with fraud for allegedly doing this.

He alleged she had also used a municipal vehicle for private purposes.

He added that Maphumulo is also being investigated for misuse of R2 500 of municipal money.

Another source said Maphumulo had been rude and disrespected the municipal manager, Max Moyo.

“She did not want to do her job because she thought she was more senior than other senior managers, and she did not want to take instructions from Moyo,” he said.

He said the problem was that Maphumulo believed that, because she had been in charge of human resources at the municipality, then all others must respect her.

However, Maphumulo denied any wrongdoing. She said she was being made the scapegoat for the municipality’s troubles.

“I don’t know what I have done wrong but I can’t comment any further because the matter is sitting with the labour court,” she said.

Attempts to obtain comment from the Mpofana Municipality were unsuccessful yesterday.

The municipality was dissolved on September 3 and all seven councillors were sacked. Maphumulo’s suspension comes at a time when political parties are preparing for by-elections to be held on November 26.
