Mr Price Pro Surf brings in millions and boosts tourism

THE annual Mr Price Pro Surf competition came to a splashing end yesterday after a week of activity at the Willard and Salt Rock Beaches on North Coast, depositing millions of rands in the area.

Timmy Reyes (31) from the United States earned himself the Mr Price Pro Ballito surfing championship.

Out of the 96 surfers from around the world who had entered, only 10 were South African. Jordy Smith was the last of the locals to get knocked out of the competition.

The beach festival attracted over 100 000 visitors over the seven days of the competition, no marked difference from last year.

The free concerts over three nights attracted a crowd of close to 15 000 people on each night. Matthew Mole, Majozi, Gangs of Ballet and 5 FM’s Roger Goode and DJ Fresh were some of the local talent who performed.

Other attractions included a flee market and daily live entertainment.

Spokesperson Pierre Tostee said the last day had waves reaching up to 1,5 metres. “There has been spectacular weather up until Saturday, but Sunday’s weather brought in the best waves,” he said.

Ward councillor Collen Marsh said the event has been phenomenal for Ballito’s tourism sector since it moved from Durban five years ago. “It’s been an absolute success since kids are on holiday and there’s plenty of entertainment.”

Marsh added the event had brought in millions of rands to the area. “It is the biggest event on the North Coast so we are very happy to have it here,” he said.
