Mr Price top the podium

2008-11-18 00:00

PRODIGAL Khumalo and Moses Lepheana took the red and white of Mr Price to the peak of the podium in Sunday’s Stella Transnet Port Terminals 15 km Tribute Race in Durban.

The pre-race drizzle and overcast conditions that dogged the event no doubt contributed to the relatively fast times, despite the hills that punctuate the route.

Khumalo and Lepheana were stride-for-stride for the majority of the two-lap course around the Glenwood and Umbilo suburbs, with only the final spurt down Helen Joseph Road and run into the finish able to separate the talented duo.

Khumalo had a 20 m advantage when he broke the tape to record a winning time of 45 minutes and 54 seconds. The speedster, who finished second to Zimbabwean Elmore Sibanda in 2007, improved his time by almost a minute. Lepheana, making a return to shorter distances after his efforts in the recent Nedbank Soweto marathon, added victory in the 35 to 39 category to his second place.

Formula One’s Samuel Pazanga, a real contender for most of the race, took third overall after shaking free from the tenacious and experienced Thubalethu Phaku of the Durban University of Technology, who had to settle for fourth place just under a minute behind Khumalo. Professor Mollen was a distant fifth, but gave Mr Price three finishers in the top five.

The popular race attracted over 1 200 runners, the biggest field in the event’s six-year history, and brought out a number of other club stalwarts, including Eloi de Oliveira, who won the 50 to 59 age group.

Olivia Chitate secured the double for Mr Price, winning the women’s race well clear of Jenna Challenor who was over 200 m behind at the line.

Challenor and third-placed Danielle Adlam have been away from recent races, but were attracted back by the impressive prize money offered in the Stella race.

Adlam kept fourth-placed Susette Botha at bay by fewer than 50 m, but the Collegians Harrier was still good enough to head the 35 to 39 age group.
