Msimango’s legal woes continue

2013-08-13 00:00

SUSPENDED Durban public prosecutor Phumzile Msimango’ s legal woes could be far from over and others may soon join her in the dock.

Msimango (33) made a brief appearance on a second corruption charge yesterday.

She was arrested in connection with this charge on Thursday, soon after appearing in connection with a different corruption charge.

It is alleged that she committed the latest offence in November 2012, according to court papers.

In yesterday’s proceedings, state prosecutor Barend Groen briefly addressed the court, and said more arrests connected to Msimango were imminent.

No other details were provided and NPA spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson was not in a position to give further information.

According to yesterday’s submission by Msimango’s attorney, Martin Short, the first charge relates to Msimango’s alleged soliciting of a R1 000 bribe from an accused person whose trial she was entrusted with.

This was apparently in exchange for Msimango not having the person’s fingerprints taken and forwarded to the local criminal records centre.

Msimango’s bail was extended yesterday, with the initial conditions still in place.

These include that she must report at the Broad Street police station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 6 am and 6 pm.

She is not allowed to apply for a passport or communicate with the orderly and the clerk of court F, and she should give the state notice of any change of address.

The matter was adjourned to August 26.
