Msunduzi: Workers allege car theft being ignored

2012-01-13 00:00

AN employee in the Msunduzi Parks and Recreation Department took a car home without permission only to have it stolen from his house.

Instead of sympathising with his plight, fellow workers were furious that no action was taken against him, when other employees had previously been disciplined for much less serious offences.

There is a council resolution that no cars can be taken out without authorisation.

Some workers alleged that the matter was being swept under the carpet because the employee had friends in senior positions within the municipality. Others alleged that the car that was stolen was new and had been only recenlty bought.

On the unauthorised use of the car Msunduzi spokesperson Nqobile Madonda said that groundsmen in the Parks department are allowed to use vehicles after hours. Madonda said this was to ensure that venues are prepared for use by different sporting codes as most of the sporting events take place after hours and on weekends.

She said the vehicle that was stolen was not new, it was a 15-year-old Toyota Venture and it had been recovered by the SAPS in Hammarsdale.

She denied that the matter had been swept under the carpet. “There is an inquiry into the incident which will determine a course of action,” she said.
