Msunduzi finally saves its ‘bacon’

2014-12-11 00:00

MSUNDUZI Municipality had to sort its bacon from its beacon before winning recognition for having one of KZN’s best prepared Integrated Development Plans (IDP).

Co-operative Governance Department representative Katherine Sarabjiet, who presented the award, let councillors in on a secret.

She said that for five years the introductory page of the Msunduzi IDP, which was meant to be revised every year, read: “The IDP is a bacon of light …,” instead of a beacon of light.

In 2013, this was finally corrected.

Sarabjiet said the team of assessors also saw that serious thought had gone into the document and that it had been greatly revised.

According to Sarabjiet, that was the first time Msunduzi had one of the top 10 IDPs in the province. “The revisions this year were up to the same high standard as 2013, earning the municipality the best prepared IDP for the second consecutive year,” she said.

Sarabjiet told councillors that she used to work at Msunduzi years ago and felt embarrassed for the municipality every time she saw that the “bacon” error had not been corrected.

AN IDP is a super plan for an area which gives an overall framework for social and economic development for the area.

This includes how land should be used, what infrastructure and services are needed and how the environment should be protected.

The IDP has to be drawn up with extensive community consultation.
