Msunduzi: ‘no’ to councillors’ raise

2011-01-27 00:00

IF there was muttering, it went unheard as councillors at Msunduzi Municipality graciously accepted that Co-operative Governance MEC Nomusa Dube did not approve their five percent salary increase.

Last year President Jacob Zuma announced that councillors would receive salary increases provided their municipalities could afford to do so — this would be determined by the Co-operative Governance MEC.

In December last year the Msunduzi council passed a resolution approving the submission of an application to the MEC for the five percent salary increase.

Dube’s letter was tabled at yesterday’s council meeting. She wrote that, having considered the application and the current situation at the municipality — it had become necessary for intervention action to be instituted — she decided that no increases would be approved.
