Msunduzi rates set to rise 8%

2011-03-31 00:00

THE Msunduzi Municipality has passed a draft budget, mindful of an election on the horizon.

Tariff increases for most services were maintained at eight percent, the same as last year.

Residents will face an eight percent increase in property rates, water and sanitation charges, and for refuse collection. Electricity tariffs are higher because of the Eskom increases. Bulk electricity users will face a 21,6% increase and general households 23,3%.

On property rates the municipality said the revenue will increase by eight percent for the 2011/12 financial year and the primary rate randage will be increased by six percent.

Deputy Mayor Jabu Ngubo said that the proposed increases would give the municipality a surplus of R90 000.

The draft budget will be made available at municipal offices for public scrutiny over the next month.

Ngubo said the draft budget was balancing and for the first time was done department by department before being consolidated.

Democratic Alliance whip Rodger Ashe said he was not in agreement with the draft budget and that his party will make further input.

Inkatha Freedom Party caucus leader Dolo Zondi said that his party accepts the draft budget with reservations. “We approve budgets every year but the effects are not felt at grassroots levels,” he said.
