Much to scream about

2013-09-21 00:00

SONY has announced the availability of its own phone-cross-tablet or “phablet”, in South Africa.

At an event held in Durban earlier this week, it was announced that the Sony Xperia Z Ultra will be delivered to local network providers by the end of the month.

The smartphone comes fitted with a 6,4-inch triluminous display, which is said to put out more colour hue for a vibrantly-coloured picture, compared with the Super Amoled displays found on most smartphones today.

Being a bulky device similar in size to the Samsung Galaxy Note, the Xperia Z Ultra was designed with women in mind, because of the simple reason that it fits comfortably into a handbag, but not so well into a pocket — carrying the smartphone in your back pocket and trying to get it out and put it back in makes the size a bit of a disadvantage.

However, there’s much to scream out about this device: it has a longer-lasting battery that is said to last twice as long as the battery of an iPhone.

The Xperia Z Ultra is also good for impressing fans of iPhone and Samsung — just say the magic words: “can your device do this?” before submerging it into a glass or bucket of water.

Much like its smaller brother, the Xperia Z, the Ultra version is one of very few smart devices on the market that are dust proof and waterproof up to 1,5 metres.

The device runs on the Android Jelly Bean operating system, with an eight-megapixel camera at the rear and a two-megapixel facing.

Last year, Sony punted the Xperia T device as the “James Bond smartphone”.

After purchasing a few accessories for your Sony Xperia Z Ultra, you too can feel like you’ve just visited Q at the British secret services headquarters.

Accessories that can be bought for the device include the “phone for your phone”, a secondary device that can be used to make and answer calls, and view SMSs.

Recently, Sony also announced the smartwatch, a device that can be used to view messages and notifications, and find your phone if you need too.

What’s more, the smartwatch device can be used on an Android device with the operating system Ice Cream Sandwich.
