Muden: schools get mobile labs

2010-07-19 00:00

MOBILE laboratories fitted with computers, projectors and equipment to perform over 131 science demonstrations were handed to the Muden community at the weekend when Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor visited the area.

They also got the opportunity, through an imbizo, to voice their frustration over a lack of services.

Three labs, worth R85 000 each, were donated by Sasol to be used by under-resourced schools in the area.

The donation is said to cover the cost of training teachers and replenishing chemicals.

Ministerial spokesperson Lunga Ngqengelele said the donation was initiated by a local organisation that asked the minister for labs for schools in the area, as pupils were learning science by rote, instead of doing practical work. As a result, the pupils would pass with flying colours while at school, only to come undone when they arrived at university, he said.

Ngqengelele said the imbizo was attended by officials from the Social Development Department and the SA Social Security Agency, who assisted with identity documents and grant issues.

“We’ve had a very good turn-out. People have raised concerns over the lack of water and electricity. They’ve also complained about sanitation.

“We also heard that there are not enough schools in the area and that children have to travel on foot to get to school, some 20 km. Some children are forced to use vans that are not roadworthy,” said Ngqengelele.

He added that the department’s objective is to encourage children to take science and maths, “which are needed to build the economy”.
