Mulenga in the soup yet again

2013-09-10 00:00

IT seems nothing can separate Supersport United midfielder Clifford Mulenga (26) from controversy.

The talented winger failed to appear at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday for his drunken driving case. It is alleged that he was caught driving a BMW 325i at 131 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N3 southbound near the Peter Brown off-ramp.

“The Master”, as he is affectionately known, was stopped by a traffic official for speeding and was subsequently breathalysed as he was allegedly reeking of alcohol. He was found to be driving while his alcohol level was over the legal limit.

Mulenga, who is out on R500 bail, failed to appear in court yesterday and a warrant for his arrest was issued, but stayed until September 18.

The well-travelled player has had many stints with PSL clubs, including Pretoria University, Bidvest Wits, Thanda Royal Zulu, Mpumalanga Black Aces and Bloemfontein Celtic, with many of them citing disciplinary reasons for parting ways with the left-footed star.

Mulenga rose to stardom in 2007 when he was named Glo-Caf Young Player of the Year. However, his promising career took a downward path as a number of clubs distanced themselves from him after it emerged that the Zambian Football Association chased him out of their camp when they won the 2011 Africa Cup of Nations, and it was again reported that it was for disciplinary reasons.
