Mum and son survive: Two trucks crush car

2010-01-18 00:00

A WOMAN and her son are lucky to be alive after their car was crushed between two articulated trucks on the N3 Pietermaritzburg carriageway near Old Howick Road, Wembley, on Saturday morning.

It is thought that a car carrier without a payload was headed towards Pietermaritzburg when it jackknifed while negotiating a bend. The driver lost control of the vehicle and the truck came to rest sideways across the national road.

A woman driving a light motor vehicle was unable to avoid the stationary truck and slammed into the trailer, the front of the vehicle wedging itself beneath the steel truck trailer.

Another articulated truck travelling in the same direction was unable to stop in time and ploughed into the back of the car, wedging it between the two goods vehicles.

Jeff Wicks of the Netcare911 said the 18-year-old man managed to clamber from a broken window to safety.

“The Netcare911 paramedics carefully extricated his mother who had sustained serious injuries. Both were transported by ambulance to hospital for emergency medical attention.”
