Municipality acts fast on illegally dumped waste

2011-05-04 00:00

A KEEN environmentalist had a swift response after reporting illegal dumping of waste to the Msunduzi Municipality, which she saw while jogging in the Ferncliffe Nature Reserve.

Jane Pennefather said she runs there regularly, so when she saw a pile of three waste bags lying in the nature reserve she alerted the municipality’s waste management.

“I always phone the municipality when I see people or waste being dumped in prohibited areas. I was just doing my duty as a citizen and I found the municipality very responsive when I called them this matter,” said Pennefather.

Siva Padayachee, a waste management foreman at Msunduzi Municipality, said they have cleared the rubbish from the area and said they would issue a fine to the person found to have dumped the waste. He said they have an address and contact details of a man whose name is known to The Witness who will be asked to explain how his rubbish ended up at the nature reserve.

“We are grateful to honest citizens like Jane Pennefather for alerting us that there was illegal dumping at the nature reserve, otherwise we might not have found out about it,” said Padayachee.

He urged members of the public to alert the municipality’s waste management division if anyone is spotted dumping illegally by calling 033 392 5359 or Padayachee himself at 073 735 3367.

“We want to ensure that people stop dumping in prohibited areas by bringing them to book,” added Padayachee.

The man whose name was found on letters in the rubbish denied he is responsible for the illegal dumping. He said he has not lived at that address for more than a year and now lives in Oak Park. Besides, he added, he abhors dumping.

“I have actually reported a couple of people for illegal dumping,” he said.
