Municipality praised for feasible development plan

2013-11-28 00:00

MSUNDUZI Municipality has won high praise from the KZN Provincial government for its Integrated Development Plan (IDP).

The municipality was among the top 10 municipalities in the province to have a most credible plan.

Nonsundu Ndonga, the KZN chief regional and town planner in the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), was at yesterday’s full council meeting to explain the award. She said the IDP gives a framework for development within the municipality and that Msunduzi’s plan was credible because it talked to government’s long-term 2030 National Development Plan.

Ndonga said the plan was in harmony with the provincial government’s programme, had strategic focus, was legally compliant and that the projects were feasible. Ndonga said the IDP was assessed by a panel of independent experts.

As it was the penultimate council meeting for the year, councillors expressed a vote of confidence in municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi for his role in improving service delivery.

Executive Committee (Exco) member Thulani Xulu said he had seen a huge improvement in service delivery. “We must salute our staff and ourselves — councillors from all parties. We must all join the mayor at his next Imbizo and tell our people how we are delivering,” he said.

Deputy Mayor Thobani Zuma said when the current council took office, the municipality was described as being in ICU but about to be moved into the general ward. Zuma said the municipality was on a path to success. Last year, it was awarded Blue Drop status for its tap water quality and now it has received an award for its IDP.
